Alfred's Kid's Guitar Course is a fun method that teaches kids to play songs on the guitar right away. I loved teaching through this because it only focused on the first 3 strings: including reading notation and playing chords. Book 2 picks up with strings 4, 5, & 6 and builds complete 6-string chords.

This is a great book on how to play the guitar. It is simple, but goes through tuning, parts of the guitar, strumming, single notes and easy chords. It has a CD to use for tuning, instruction and playing the songs. It is oriented toward kids age 5 and above, with full color cartoons, little animals to help learn etc., but could be used by anyone who wants to start playing right away.
