A great book on styles

I'm a beginner on drums, been playing guitar for a while, wanted to branch out. After completing "Simply Drums", some other books plus books on rudiments, I needed something more exciting. The way this book is broken down, adding one element at a time, is just outstanding. As soon as I opened it, I wanted to hit the kit! My only complaint is I would have liked a few more bars of the breakdowns, maybe add some fills. But for learning different styles of the great ones, fantastic!

Highly recommended for any drummer

I started playing the drums 20 years ago and thought I'd seen it all when it came to drum books... until now. "On The Beaten Path" by Rich Lackowski is truly a "must-have" book for any drummmer. Bottom line - reading this will make you play better, regardless of what skill level you are now. I picked it up for myself at first, and as I went through it and was learning about all the drumming Gods, their drum setups, and not only how they play, but why their playing is unique to them, it occured to me that I could use this book with my students too! The lessons are broken out by skill level, so each drummer explored in the book has a beginner, intermediate, and advanced transcription and lesson showing you how to play their classic licks and/or solos. Very cool stuff. I'll still use all the classic methods with my students, but I'll also use "On The Beaten Path" because it provides something really important that the classic methods don't - the history of important drummers and how they shaped the development of music in various styles. Each of the drummers in the book contributed something so important to the drumming community, and understanding the evolution is a key ingredient to making a 'good' drummer into a 'great' drummer. So, pick it up and dive in - you won't be dissapointed.
