Read this before you buy!

This is a good book, very deep. However, I STRONGLY recommend buying all 3 books separately! This book weighs like 20 lbs, is very awkward to tote around, & it will take you a long time to get through all 3 volumes anyway! also, it's intimidating seeing this 300 page book in front of you! It seems you aren't getting anywhere! Take my advice, but each volume separately. The book & the contents are fine, but it is simply too big & cumbersome!

A very useful book

What other reviews have said about this book is absolutely true. You buy this book if you want to go all the way. Don't use it by itself, though- it is boring by itself. If I were starting to play guitar again, I would get this book, a rock or metal guitar method, and a songbook. There is also some theory in the book that I have had to look up on the internet to get a clear explanation of- it is obviously meant to be accompanied by a teacher.

Maybe after 2+ years learning from others

My teacher started me on #1. I had 4 years of piano so I knew how to navigate notes. There is a fundamental disconnect between the book and how most guitarists view the instrument. The guitar is not a piano. The guitar is an instrument where patterns are more important. Patterns define how a musician moves their hands and how chords are connected. 1-4-5 blues has simple patterns. Holdsworth Jazz has complicated multi-key multi-time signature patterns. This book is not a good way to learn either.

If you are buying this for your child, make sure it fits their learning objectives. If playing Rock is what they are passionate about, DO NOT start with this book. It will very likely KILL their passion by turning something fun an inspirational to something dull and perspirational. There needs to be balance in any learning program. The objectives of these books are not for most students.

I've been studying this book for around 4+ years, and I have to admit this is the best guitar book out there. It has exercises for everything. You have to be a really determined musician if you want to buy this book. There are no tabs for those of you who can't read music, but there are hundreds of exercises in this book that will make you better at reading. If you want to be an amazing guitarist and have the patience and determination, I would seriously recommend this book.

The only book you'll ever need.

I have studied this book for the past 25 years, I have been through books 1 and 2 many times, I haven't got book 3 because it was sold seperately. An example of what this book can do for you. Imagine hearing a song on the radio and whistling along with it. You don't study to whistle, you just do it and it is in key and so on.... This book has taught me to do this on guitar, play my very thoughts. It is worth every penny, there are no old favorites in the book, you just learn to play, improvise, and become a better overall musician. If you just want to do a few fireside singalongs or something, get a tab book, If you want to go on to greater things, even become a composer, this book will keep you busy for as long as you live..
