In the Diatonic Theory and Harmony DVD, Doug Doppler teaches guitarists how to construct/dissect the modes, and in turn reference key scale degree numbers like the 1,3,5 from each mode to build triad/chords. Because most guitarists read charts only (if they read any music at all), using the shapes of scales compared to the major scale is a key trick to visually breaking down the differences between each of the 7 modes based on the major scale. Once you know the differences AND similarities, it becomes easy to construct and deconstruct chords and figure out how they fit diatonically.

This DVD features a number of exercises that show you systematically how to break down scales into their scale degree numbers and build chords from these numbers, and simultaneously have exercises showing you how to place triads, power chords, 7 chords, (9) chords diatonically. The accompanying audio CD features chord progressions for each of the above types of chords. In the final segment of the DVD, Doug outlines how the chord progressions are functioning diatonically, as well as what you can play over the top.

I've about two hundred videos and this is by far the most complete for understanding theory, scales chord progressions, and music as it relates to the guitar I've played for over 20 years and this is the most helpful "tool" I have..

Highly Recommended Instructional DVD

This DVD was my first step into guitar theory. I enjoyed how the video lessons coordinated with printable written lessons to provide an enriched learning environment. Doug's instruction helped me to not only understand chord shapes, scales, and modes as well as the relationship between them, but it also provides a thorough understanding of the mechanics of each and how to apply them in real world musical contexts. More than instructional DVD, it is more of a curricular foundation for musical development that encourages growth and exploration. It is my trusted source of Diatonic Theory reference.

Best instructional video I've ever seen

Guitar 411 Diatonic Theory and Harmony is the best instructional guitar video I've ever seen. It breaks down the material in segments that are effortless to understand and the accompanying printable material makes it easy to go back and review without having to search out that part of the DVD. The production is very professional and the instructor seems to be a genuinely likeable guy who enjoys what he is doing.

The only thing I would caution buyers about is that it is not intended for an absolute novice. It assumes a certain level of familiarity with the most basic concepts of playing guitar (tuning, posture, picking, fretting, etc.) So if you’re a complete beginner you might want to look elsewhere first then come back to this when you have picked up these fundamentals.

But if you’re ready to move into intermediate material or are an advanced player looking for a new perspective on the same old stuff it is an excellent addition to your collection. I know that his approach has given me new insight into teaching my daughter.
