Learn how to play classic blues songs from the masters themselves! |
Blues Guitar Legends by eMedia is a great CD-ROM-based learning tool for guitar players of all skill levels. Simplified chord versions of the songs are ideal for beginners, while experienced players can learn note-for-note from the full transcriptions of both lead and rhythm parts. During the lessons, the animated fretboard shows you the fingerings in real time, so you don't need to read music. Original recordings and variable-speed MIDI tracks let you learn at the tempo you choose. Looping lets you select and repeat tricky sections of a song. As an enhanced CD-ROM, the eMedia Blues Guitar Legends can be played either on an audio CD player or on your computer. Features include Playing Tips: Instructional material presents the chords and tips needed to master the song and also helps you emulate the tone and technique of the blues guitar greats. Artist Biographies and Photos: Gain insights into the lives of the legends.
Animated Fretboard: Watch the fretboard come alive with realtime display of notes, including bends, vibrato, and slides. Includes both right- and left-handed views from both the perspective of looking down at your guitar and across at an instructor's guitar. Automatic Tuner: Visually tune your electric or acoustic guitar by playing into a computer microphone. Includes custom tunings for specific songs when needed. The guitar tuner also provides audio reference notes for each string. Metronome: Allows you to set your own tempo and work on your picking speed, rhythm, and timing. Provides both visual cue and/or audio tick. Full range of tempi, from largo to presto. Recorder: Record and play yourself back. This feature allows you to compare your recordings with the originals, fine tune your skills, and store musical ideas.

great learning toolk

I have had guitars since I was 15, but never really learned to play until last 5 yrs. I took lessons from a good teacher, and also bought this program, mainly b/c it has Statesboro Blues by the Allmans. It is worth it for that song alone, and also BB King The Thrill is Gone. I also have Fretboard Logic, and the Relative Pitch lessons. they are like anything else - you get out of them what you put into then.

Excellent Learning Tool

This software was worth the money if only to learn "Hideaway", the famous Blues instrumental popularized by Freddie King, covered by Stevie Ray Vaughan, and dating back to the classic E Blues runs of Magic Sam and Lightnin' Hopkins. I’ve owned this tutorial disc for about a year, and it is a wonderful complement to any Blues guitar student’s library of resources. I’m running XP on a Dell and the eMedia program runs fine. It is amazing, really. The display depicts a guitar fret board with colored dots illuminating in time with the music. You can isolate the guitar part, slow it down to a crawl, loop it if you like, and still hear the notes in pitch. I think this tool is excellent for any level of aspiring Blues guitarist. Obviously, more skilled guitarists will pick up on the tunes with greater ease, but even beginners can eventually learn the songs, albeit at a slower tempo than on the actual recording. Naturally, as with any learning tool, it is incumbent upon the guitarist to be determined, focused and persistent. If you are a visual person, I think this is a great tool. If you have a decent computer, are inspired by the song selection and are committed to learning them as quickly as your ability will allow, I see no reason not to consider this excellent software. For beginning-intermediate guitarists seeking to play contemporary electric Blues, I also recommend the instructional DVD's from Ronnie Earl (Blues Guitar with Soul) and Robben Ford (Playin' the Blues).

I thought this would be cool but it isn't. all the song are spread out and there isn't very good songs. The only good thing is you can take the cd an listen to it in a cd player but otherwise look for an alternative to play these songs. Not recommended.

Purchase at your own risk

In theory, this should be an outstanding product, particularly for the beginner, or for a musician attempting to capture or reproduce a particular sound. The variety of features is impressive. My favorite features were the artist biographies, song background information, and playing tips. The animated fret board is also a very useful tool. Unfortunately, the reality is quite disappointing.
One negative feature of the software is that the navigation (between features, songs, etc.) is rather awkward. It seems like there is no such thing as a straight line between point A and point B.
However, the two worst features are that the product does not work as advertised, and that the eMedia customer service/support is non-existent. I had the CD for a few months (less than half a year), when we upgraded to a new PC, and went from Windows 98 to XP. The software, which had worked sluggishly on 98, failed to make sound on XP. The graphics still worked, but the sound was gone. When I went to the eMedia web site for help, I got the following information:
Blues Guitar Legends will not run on Windows XP
When attempting to run Blues Guitar Legends in Windows XP, you may experience that it will not run (it does nothing). The older versions of this title do not run on Windows XP, the versions that work on XP are 1.0b or later. Please contact us (eMedia) to upgrade to a newer version of these products.
Even though I have contacted eMedia's customer support (via the eMedia web site) three times over the past year (to upgrade, or for some other resolution), eMedia has still refused to answer any of my email. In a nutshell, the product has some potentially good features, but buy it at your own risk. Once you buy it, you are on your own.

If you want to know how to do some classics note for note, this is good. If you want some good instruction in blues "theory" this is great. Learn major and minor pentatonic scales and blues scales. B.B. King's phrasing is a lot harder to get than it may sound.
